Jean Frances Costlow's Obituary
Born September 26, 1918 in Mt. Pleasant, TX and passed away May 9, 2015 in Plano, TX after a brief illness. Jean married Leo M. Costlow of Palestine, TX on January 1, 1936. He passed away in 1955 leaving her a widow at age 37. She is survived by their only child, Annell Rogers and son-in-law Donald L. Rogers, as well as by Don’s three children and their spouses and by four great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law and many loving nieces and nephews from the Costlow family. Her two brothers and one sister all preceded her in death. Jean was the third child born to Mary Florence Gregory Sloan and Isaac Gilford Sloan. She had deep roots in Titus County. She was a great granddaughter of Isaac Rogers Riddle, who moved with his family to Titus County, TX from his native Kentucky in 1847 at the age of 19. He commenced a medical practice in 1855 and continued to practice until his death in 1903. In addition, Dr. Riddle was ordained to preach by the Baptist Church at Union in 1868. He was instrumental in establishing a mission and church at the present day Damascus community and pastored that church for 29 years. One of his daughters, Emma Elizabeth Slone, was Jean’s paternal grandmother. Jean dearly loved her Granny Slone who was a wonderful example of Christian womanhood to all her many children and grandchildren. Jean and Leo moved to Dallas in 1944 where he opened an automobile repair business. Jean rejoined the workforce after Annell began school. She was a saleswoman for Rose Dress Shops and served as manager of the Oak Cliff location on West Jefferson for several years. In 1959, she went to work for Employers Casualty Insurance where she advanced to a secretarial position before retiring at age 65. She resided in East Dallas most of her life, then moved to Plano in 2002 to be closer to Annell and Don. Jean spent her last four years at Day Spring Assisted Living in Plano where she was lovingly cared for by the staff and volunteers. She enjoyed the many activities and found the Christian atmosphere at Day Spring comforting. Jean was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant at age 11. She joined Highland Baptist Church of Dallas in 1967 where she remained a member until her death. Her church and her church family were very dear to her. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 10:00 AM in Wildwood Chapel at Restland Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75238 at Restland Road.
