Jean Garrett Deal's Obituary
Jean Garrett Deal, lovingly known as “Big Red” to her friends and “Nana” to her family, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on March 23, 1931, in Monticello, Arkansas, she lived a life full of love, laughter, and a fiery spirit that inspired everyone around her.
The daughter of Jane Anderson Garrett and John Bunyan Garrett, Jean excelled academically, graduating with honors from Monticello High School in 1949. Upon graduation, Jean attended the University of Arkansas A&M/Monticello. She carried her sense of dedication and strong work ethic throughout her life.
On February 12, 1950, Jean married the love of her life, John Richard Deal Jr. They shared nearly 60 wonderful years together until his passing on August 10, 2009. Their life together was marked by her deep devotion and love for her family. Jean was a proud mother of three children Cynthia Goodsell (Jim Goodsell), John Deal (Elizabeth Deal), and Lisa Howerton (Carl Howerton) and a grandmother of four Kimberly Batcheller, Melissa Deal, Byron Howerton, and Trent Howerton. She was a great-grandmother of ten, always putting her family first.
Jean was also a successful businesswoman. In 1987, she became the president of Jean Deal and Associates, a subsidiary of US Risk, where she led with grace and determination until her retirement in 2007. Her strong leadership earned her respect in the business world, and her independent, fiery nature made her a role model to many. Jean was a member of Valley View United Methodist Church and participated in Bible Study Fellowship for five years completing the curriculum at that time. She was also an avid Jazzercise enthusiast, remaining active and vibrant well into her later years. Jean had a special gift for making people feel cherished, especially on their birthdays. Whether with a phone call, a card, or a heartfelt message, she went out of her way to make sure those around her felt loved and appreciated. She had an infectious laugh and a natural ability to connect with everyone she met.
Her legacy of love, strength, generosity, and joy will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who were fortunate to know her. Jean will be remembered for her warm heart, quick wit, and the deep connections she nurtured throughout her life.
