Jean Carol Dixon's Obituary
Jean Carol Barger Dixon, devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, trusted friend, Bible teacher, and faithful servant of Jesus Christ entered into the glorious presence of the Father on August 8, 2020. She and her twin brother, Jim, were born to William Carson Barger and Mary Viola Barger in Big Springs, Tennessee, on April 16, 1928. She was born into God’s family at a young age under the influence of her godly grandmother, Amanda Alford. Her family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, when she was ten years old, and there she met her future husband, Robert Dixon, in the fourth grade. She attended Carson Newman College. Bob and Jean were married on October 23, 1948, after he returned from his service in the Navy. Soon after their two daughters were born, Bob and Jean knew that God called them to a life of ministry. They moved to Ft. Worth, Texas, for training at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. They served four churches before devoting most of their lives to serving Christ through the ministries of Texas Baptist Men.
Jean’s life is a picture of one who did ordinary deeds in an exceptional way. She found great fulfillment supporting and encouraging her husband, Bob, as he followed God’s call on his life. She worked and ministered by his side, much of the time content to be in the background. Her house was always one of generous hospitality. She had a heart for immigrants as she taught Chinese and Kurds English and citizenship lessons. She opened her home to orphans many summers thereby giving dorm parents a time of respite. She provided a monthly birthday party for a nursing home remembering the often forgotten. However, her most beloved Kingdom work was being a Bible teacher. She found joy in studying God’s Word and sharing great truths with others. Jean led a life of true godliness.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dixon. She is survived by daughter Kathy Treadwell and husband Don, daughter Becky Faulkner and husband A.G. She is also survived by three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, a twin brother Jim Barger, and a host of family and friends. Due to the current health crisis, the visitation is by invitation only on Thursday, August 13th and the funeral service will be a small family gathering at Restland on Friday, August 14th.
