Jean McClendon Lewis' Obituary
Jean passed away on December 9, 2016. She was born December 12, 1927, in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Jean’s parents were Brodie Jackson and Vallee Connor McClendon. She married Frank Barry Lewis and they had three sons. Jean is survived by Frank and his wife Martha, Brodie and Les Lewis. “Gram” loved and doted on her seven beloved grand-children and two great grand-children. Gram attended every school play and athletic event in support of her children and grand-children. Jean attended the University of Oklahoma, pledged Theta, played many sports lettering in tennis. She played tennis all her life winning numerous tournaments at Brookhaven Country Club and gave lessons to many people and all her grand-children. Barry and Jean moved to Dallas in 1949 and joined High Park Methodist Church where she was a member for 65 years. She taught Sunday School and was the greeter with the beautiful smile. Jean worked at the Apparel Mart during markets, drove for Meals on Wheels and volunteered for countless HPMC, Theta, PTA and political events. Jean enjoyed travel with friends and family, especially with twin brother, Joe McClendon and sister, Mary Fletcher. Jack and W.C. McClendon were also Jean’s much loved brothers. Jean was a breast cancer survivor who was so dedicated to her rehabilitation that she began classes at the YMCA and was featured in the DMN and Times Herald. She ran and volunteered in numerous Komen Races. Jean was dedicated to her faith, family, friends. She was a role model, admired by so many and will be missed, but never forgotten. Jean is now reunited with Barry after being without him for 36 years. Service will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church Friday, December 16, 2016 at 2:00 PM, at Cox Chapel followed by reception in Fellowship Hall—located by SMU Campus at Mockingbird and Hillcrest Roads.
