Jean Reaves' Obituary
Jean Reaves was born November 5, 1930 in Memphis, Tennessee and passed away November 3, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. Preceded in death by husband Bob A. Reaves, sister Anne Sullivan, stepmother Pansy R. Shirley, father John Ivo Shirley and mother Ermie D. Shirley. Survived by son John A. Reaves and wife Judy, daughter Elizabeth Vaughan, grandsons Stephen Vaughan and Charles Vaughan, sister Audrey Rainey and husband John, and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Jean graduated from Central High School in Memphis, Tennessee in 1948. She went on to graduate from Mississippi College with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1953. She received the Dixon Wecter scholarship at Baylor University and earned her Master of Arts in American Studies in 1955. She taught freshman English at Tyler Junior College and returned to Baylor University to teach freshman English. She met her future husband Bob A. Reaves, and they were married in Waco, Texas on September 5, 1959. Soon they moved to Dallas, and she taught freshman English at S.M.U. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Dallas for over 55 years. She taught fourth grade Sunday School for many years and served as a library volunteer. From 1978-1995 she taught eighth grade English at Westwood Junior High School in Richardson, Texas. In her retirement, she enjoyed her book club and Bible study group. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, loving sister, cousin, aunt and friend. She cherished her many close friendships she cultivated during her life. Jean lived a life of faith, staying dedicated to her family and friends. Family will receive friends on November 7, 2016 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held on November 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Restland Memorial Chapel, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Dallas.
