Jeanne Hammett's Obituary
Alice Jeanne Hammett
Shortly after midnight on January 9, 2020 Jeanne Hammett met her Lord in Paradise. Just four days shy of her 97th birthday, she lived a full, faithful, abundant and grace-filled life. She was a joyous presence and will be truly missed by her family and friends.
A native of McCrory, Arkansas, as a young lady Jeanne Myers moved to Tyler, Texas where, in 1946, she met the great love of her life. Charles Hammett saw her for the first time on the stairs of the department store where they both worked and said to his friend and co-worker, “That’s the girl I’m going to marry!” After a short courtship, the two were indeed married on April 5, 1947 and he worshipped her until the day he died.
Unable to have children of their own, they adopted their son Hank in 1956. Following a move to Richardson in 1957, their daughter Holly was adopted in 1958. Jeanne loved her family dearly and was a very devoted mother and wife. In the early 60’s, her younger sister became bedridden with MS and Jeanne and Charles chose to build her a room onto their home and became fulltime caregivers for the next 30 years.
Always an impeccable and gracious hostess, Jeanne enjoyed playing bridge with their beloved bridge club, camping and boating with friends and family, square dancing and being very involved with their church and numerous Bible studies. As time went on, she and Charles developed a love of travel and were able to go on many wonderful trips and cruises. Onboard ship, they would dance the night away.
Compassionate, loving and caring, the Hammetts were always the first to reach out to anyone who needed their help, whatever the circumstances. Perfect examples of the Great Commandment, they put their family and friends ahead of themselves, constantly willing to sacrifice their own needs and wants in order to give to others.
In the last few years of her life, Jeanne suffered with dementia. Her family extends very special thanks to the caregivers at The Plaza at Edgemere Memory Care. They have gone above and beyond to care for our precious Momma. Also, a very special thank you to the nurses and doctors at Medical City, who showed an amazing amount of care, kindness and comfort in her final hours.
Jeanne is survived by Hank Hammett and Dale Dietert, Holly and Lindsey Mortimer, Jim Myers, Hunter and Patsy Hammett, and many other friends who over the years have become cherished members of our family. She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Charles Hammett, and by her close relatives Billie Myers, Annie Lee Myers and Craig Mortimer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The National Kidney Foundation or to the Alzheimer’s Association. A private graveside service will be held at Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery.
