Joan West Hines' Obituary
Joan West Hines, was born in Dallas, Texas; daughter of William E. and Kathryn Harper West on April 14, 1930, and died in Dallas surrounded by loving family on December 12, 2019 at the age of 89. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1947 with a full academic scholarship, was attending SMU and active in her sorority, Delta Gamma, when she met her future husband, fellow student, Norman P. Hines, Jr. Actually the meeting was a 'calling the wrong number' accident as Norman got the telephone number from the SMU student directory of another girl with the exact same name. But fate had its own plans for these two, and after dating for almost two years, they married in a double wedding ceremony with Norman's sister and brother-in-law (Margaret & Harold Baxter) and the rest is history. Later, Norman went to SMU night law school and used Joan's considerable ability to take shorthand to help him when he opened own law practice. Eventually, with three children Joan stayed at home until the children could be on their own, still finding time to volunteer as a candy striper and other charity work. Upon reaching the age of 50, she took up golf, eventually making a hole-in-one on Hole #6 and also winning Women's Senior Club Championship at Lakewood Country Club; all this while becoming a gourmet cook. Joan’s greatest gift was her contagious and beautiful laughter, amazing and sparkling personality, and the joy she gave to those by giving of herself throughout her life to family, friends, social circles, Joan always answered the call, and never met a stranger. Joan and Norman played golf around the country, Hawaiian Islands, Canada and even in Europe, until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2006 and was only able to play another year or so. Joan and Norman loved to dance, but this also was lost. Joan adored and worshiped her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, family, friends and her beloved Yorkies and Shih Tuz(s), special recognition to “Fuzzy Lee Ping” with uncompromising loyalty and duty. Joan was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Kathryn Ann Hines-Berns, and is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Norman; daughter, Patty-Joan (PJ); son, Norman, III, daughter-in-law, Gaylynn and their child, Heather Lee, who she loved dearly; son-in-law, Jeff Berns; Buddy West, brother, of San Antonio; nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Avendelle Assisted Living on Merriman and Hospice Plus, Nurse Karen, and Pastor Mark who sang to her. A celebration of Joan's life will be Thursday, January 9th at 12:30 p.m., (Visitation at 11:30 a.m.), Wildwood Chapel, Restland Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243. Mom believed in the Word of God and her favorite Bible verse was: "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you." Ephesians 4:32.
