Joe Ray Carter's Obituary
CARTER, JOE RAY died May 15, 2021 in Plano, Texas surrounded by his loving family. Joe was a very loving husband an incredible father of three, grandfather to 10 and great-grandfather to five. He was an extremely hard worker, allowing his wife Shirley Jeanne Carter to be a stay-at-home mom, but he never neglected spending time with his family.
Joe was born December 5, 1934 in Peniel, TX to Wilburn Lafayette and Arbie Lucille Carter, both predeceasing him. Joe graduated from Boyd H.S. in 1951 and enrolled at North Texas State University at 16 years old. He started working part-time for Magnolia Oil (Mobil Oil) in Dallas in 1952 as a messenger where he eventually met Shirley in 1956. Joe had to quit school for a lack of money and entered the Army in January 1957 and married Shirley on May 9, 1957 before being shipped to Korea. Joe returned to the states in 1958 where he entered night school at Southern Methodist University and returned to work at Mobil Oil. Over his 39 year career at Mobil he and his family enjoyed living in Dallas, New Jersey, London, New Orleans and Fairfax, VA. He retired in 1992 as Mobil Oil Corporation’s Administrative Manager of Employee Relations and moved to Plano, TX.
Upon retirement Joe and Shirley took up golfing, bridge, traveling and dominoes with their many friends, but what he and Shirley enjoyed most was being around their children and grandchildren – and the grandchildren loved being around their Nana and Daddaw! Joe constantly modeled and instilled into his children and grandchildren so many wonderful traits like love, honesty, hard work, respect, perseverance and honor. His legacy and the ideals he embodied continue to live on through his family.
He believed in and deeply cared for his country. His humble beginnings and life that followed was a real life example of his belief that America is a land of opportunity that exists for all, but that opportunity waits for each individual to seize it.
Joe is survived by his sister Myrtie Evelyn Carter Cheatum of Jacksonville FL, his children, Joe Richard Carter of Lucas, Michael Carter of McKinney, Laura Brady of West Chester, PA, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends that take comfort in the great reunion in heaven.
