Joe E. Hedge's Obituary
Joe E. Hedge, beloved son, brother, husband, father and friend, was born on January 12, 1930, in Dallas, Texas. He went to be with His Heavenly Father and join his sweetheart Cherine of 67 years on Monday, Oct. 15th, 2018, after a brief illness. He leaves behind an inheritance of faith in God, grit and determination, and an unfailing love of his children and family. Joe made the choice to serve Jesus Christ early in life. He graduated from Dallas’ Adamson High School in 1948. Joe served his country proudly during the Korean War stationed at the Naval Air Station Grand Prairie. He was an avid sports enthusiast, and played pro-am basketball in high school and before and after college. Joe also enjoyed snow skiing in Colorado, helicopter skiing in Canada, tennis and golf.Joe attended Oklahoma University, graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Geology in 1956. He went on to work for Sun Oil Company for 12 years in various locations as a field geologist. Joe was a master entrepreneur, forming many businesses through the years, including Superior Resources (oil and gas exploration), Superior Industries (manufacturing), Superior Automotive, and Superior Interests (custom home building). He was still active in home building until his death. Joe was past president of the Dallas Ski Club and was on the board of directors for Guaranty National Bank in Dallas. He was also a long-time member of Brookhollow Golf Club, Dallas Petroleum Club, and Park Cities Club.He met the love of his life, Cherine Byrd, in junior high school, and they were inseparable thereafter. They married in March, 1949, and were together 67 years until Cherine’s death in May, 2016. They welcomed two daughters, Angela and Tammy, during their marriage. The last 30 years of their married life they were partners in custom home building coupling Joe’s building expertise, and Cherine’s role as a Dallas realtor.Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Edd and Marie Hedge, wife Cherine Byrd Hedge, and brother Jack D. Hedge. Joe is survived by daughter Angela Callaway and husband Michael; daughter Tamara Johnson and husband Alfred; grandchildren Ryan Callaway and wife Kristin, Matthew Callaway and wife Betsy, Jordan Callaway, Mallory Johnson, and Parker Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was blessed with his first great grandchild Ethan Henry Callaway in December, 2016.Many thanks to the nurses and staff at Medical City Hospital of Dallas, Dr. John Demopulos, M.D., Dr. Alistair Fyfe, M.D., and Dr. Allan Shulkin, M.D. for their personal and devoted care.Services will take place at the Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas at 11am on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd, 2018. There will be a visitation on Monday, Oct. 22nd, 6-8pm at Restland. A private family burial will take place preceding the service at Restland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home of Joe and Cherine Hedge after the service. Donations in Joe’s honor in lieu of flowers can be made to The American Heart Association or The Family Place in Dallas, Texas.
