Met Mr. Campbell while I was in college at a Sigma Chi Fathers Day Golf Outing. Having just joined the fraternity, this was my first time to participate in a parents activity and I was not really sure what to expect.
Because the outing was put together by college students who had never organized something like this before, everyone seemed a bit confused when we arrived at the course. I remember feeling slightly embarrassed and hoping that my Dad - who I was planning on hitting up for some spending money later that day- would not think that this whole fraternity thing was a waste of time. Then we found out that we were paired with Bob Campbell and Bill Campbell.
Did we play great golf that day? Of course not. But I still remember how nice and welcoming both Mr. Campbell and Bill were. My father went by the name 'Dooley'. But, because my father's siblings referred to him as 'Bill' when he was a child, when Mr. Campbell called out to his son Bill, my dad thought Mr. Campbell was talking to him. For example, Mr. Campbell would say, "nice shot Bill!" and my Dad, who had not even hit his ball yet, would feel obligated to say, "thanks, I am hoping so". Upon realizing what was going on, Mr. Campbell seemed quite tickled.
That story seems quite ordinary and I doubt that Mr. Campbell would even have remembered it. Or maybe he would have. Having had the privilege of seeing some of his scrapbooks, it was clear that he delighted in recording mundane things, making sure not to take anything for granted. Regardless of whether he would have remembered or not, it is one example of what I am sure are many, many examples of how nice he was.
May God bless him and his family.
Love,
Lee Durdin
