John Daniel Carr's Obituary
John Carr passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at his residence in Houston from respiratory complications. Because of his belief in the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ he is now healed and residing in Heaven. John was a beloved husband, a caring father, a cherished grandfather, and a much loved great grandfather. His steadfast dedication and positive influences will impact the lives of his family now and for generations to come. He will be remembered forever and profoundly missed as the patriarch of our family.John Daniel Carr was born in Floresville, Texas. on September 13, 1930. He was the youngest of five children. His mother was Mary Ida “Dessie” Wallace of Manville, Texas. His father was Samuel Brown Carr of Tazewell, Tennessee. His paternal grandparents were Wiley Scott Carr and Mary Elizabeth Love. His maternal grandparents were Peter Neil Wallace and Sarah Elizabeth Whittle.John graduated from Floresville High School. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1952 with a BBA and from the University of Texas School of Law in 1954 with a LLB. He was admitted to the Texas Bar that same year. John served with distinction in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 as an Intelligence Officer.In 1958 John met and married Janet Jones Benson of Ellisville, Mississippi. Their endearing love for each other lasted almost sixty years until Janet’s passing in August of 2017. Janet and John had three children, Carol Lynn Carr Henderson, John D. “Jack” Carr, Jr. and Dwight C. Benson Sr., his step-son.John had a long and distinguished legal career in the oil and gas business. In 1968 John and his family moved to Anchorage Alaska. This was shortly after oil was discovered on the North Slope. As part of his career at Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) as a Landman, John helped to secure land and lease rights for the oil rich North Slope field at Prudhoe Bay. This was an exciting time in the history of oil and gas and John was there to experience it all. Later as part of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline negotiating team he worked with other major oil companies on the division of royalties. John’s work also allowed the family to travel to many exotic areas of the world and to live in several different places, including Alaska, Louisiana, and several Texas cities.With the children grown, John and Janet eventually settled in Houston where they lived for several decades. They attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Houston and were active in their community. John spent his retirement years doting on his wife and loving his family. In later years John suffered from Alzheimers, but never complained and was always happy to see family.John is survived by a brother Samuel Brown Carr Jr., three children, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.A funeral service will be held to celebrate and honor our beloved John at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX, on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 12:30 pm.in the Wildwood Chapel. A graveside service and burial next to his beloved Janet will follow the funeral in the Garden of the Gospel at Restland.
