John Grant Farmer's Obituary
John G. Farmer, 93, passed away peacefully April 14, 2018 in Bonham, TX. John was born on October 20, 1924 to H. Grant and Catherine Farmer in Bonham, TX. He is preceded in death by both his parents and his wife of 57 years, Patricia. He is survived by his three sons; John “Bill”, Randolph “Randy”, and Charles “Chuck” also his five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.John graduated from Bonham High School in May of 1942. He was a three year letter in football. He was “All State Mention” his senior year. He also lettered in track.In the fall of 1942, he attended Austin College on a football scholarship. When he was a freshman, he lettered and was the leading receiver and ground gainer. He volunteered for the US Army engineers in January of 1943. While in the Army Specialized Training Program at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA John lettered in track. After being discharged from the service, he attended Austin College for one year then transferred to SMU. From SMU, John Grant obtained a BBA degree with a major in law and an MBA degree with a major in finance and real estate. He taught finance at SMU and the University of Central Oklahoma.In the spring in 1945, he represented the Army Athletic Staff school (Paris, France) in track meets. John was on the staff of the school as Assistant track and football coach. He represented the staff school in track meets throughout Europe after V.E. Day, qualifying for the European Theater of Operations Teams, to compete against the Mediterranean Theater of Operations Team in Rome, Italy. He won the 400 meter run and broad jump and ran the second leg of the 400 meter sprint relay team that placed third. In September of 1945, he transferred to Bremen, Germany to play football for Bremen Port Command. He was chosen to be on the European Army All Star Team to play in the Riviera Bowl at Nice, France. John Grant was honorably discharged from active duty in March of 1946 but continued in the active reserve until 1956 when he retired as a Captain.John Grant was president of two oil companies (one of which he owned) and lived in Brisbane, Australia for two year. In Australia, he was managing director of an Australian Oil Company. John retired and lived in Dallas with his wife Patricia Barnard Farmer.Visitation will be held Wednesday April 18th 6pm-8pm at Restland Funeral Home located in Dallas, TX. Funeral Services will begin at 3pm on April 19th at the Wildwood Chapel in Restland Memorial Park.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, Texas 75243.
