John Zapata Gonzales' Obituary
John Zapata Gonzales, age 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 31, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. He will be sincerely missed by his loving family, devoted friends, and all the wonderful individuals who knew and loved him.
John’s life was a tapestry of courage, pride, and service. As a Navy veteran, he served from 1943 to 1946, bravely stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. His pride in his heritage as a Mexican-American and his dedication to his country were the cornerstones of his identity.
John dedicated much of his time to community work, leading marches for important causes and founding barrio clinics in West Dallas. He was an active member of the American Legion and extended his community efforts beyond Dallas, working on American Indian reservations.
Apart from his community work, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. With a guitar in hand and a song on his lips, he brought warmth and happiness to those around him. His music was a testament to his vibrant spirit and love for life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, children, stepchildren, numerous grandchildren, and extended family.
A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 10 AM to 8 PM, at Restland Funeral Home, located at 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75243. The funeral service will take place the following day, Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 2 PM at Restland Memorial Chapel, located at the same address. Navy honors will be rendered at graveside.
John’s legacy of service, love, and music will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
