John Graham Grubbs' Obituary
John Grubbs was a disciple of Christ. He was a loving husband to Cynthia Grubbs for more than 50 years. He was a father to Cheryl and Marc Grubbs and a loving grandfather to three Grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, and Grace.
John Graham Grubbs was born in Dallas, TX on June 17, 1941, to Ruby and Graham Grubbs. He grew up with his brother Randall Grubbs in South Oak Cliff and graduated from South Oak Cliff High school in 1959. He grew up playing baseball, learning to play the piano with his mother and flying model airplanes. During his teen age years, he played the tuba for his high school marching band and found his love for cars!
John attended North Texas State University in Denton, TX where he met the love of his life, Cynthia Grubbs. While Cynthia was still attending college, her father passed away unexpectedly so John decided he would focus on supporting her and start a family. He began working for Blum Consulting Engineering and loyally worked there for 46 years.
Mom and Dad married in 1962 and enjoyed 57 years of marriage! They both started attending Valley View Christian Church early in their marriage and quickly became involved and used their talents to support the Church and to serve the Lord. Dad could be found serving in many ways over the years including maintaining & working on church buses and vans, doing odd jobs around the church, supporting VBS activities and helping design the electrical and plumbing details during the Church construction. They formed incredible and enduring friendships that lasted their entire life especially in their church community group. Their definition of “doing life together” couldn’t have been lived out any better!
Dad’s love for cars and racing led him to purchasing his own race car! Before children he could be found on weekends flying down the highway with his loving wife while towing their Elva Courier race car behind their 1963 corvette to racing events.
Growing up Dad worked hard to provide for his family and did so without complaining. He worked many long hours but always made time for his family. He coached my soccer team for many years and attended most of Cheryl and My events. He never worked on Sunday and used that time to worship the Lord. We shared so many wonderful times together at Valley View Christian Church.
Dad loved to drive and with the help of his faithful navigator (Mom), we would load up the 1973 Impala Station Wagon every few years and head out on the road to enjoy a good old fashioned family vacation! One year he drove us from Texas to British Columbia and another year we drove all the way up the east coast to Niagara Falls.
Dad also enjoyed fishing and showcased one of his most incredible attributes, patience. He could sit in one spot for hours waiting for the perfect fish to bite. His other hobbies included, softball, flying remote-controlled airplanes, singing in the church choir, and of course tinkering with cars. He could fix any car problem imaginable! He shared many of his hobbies and talents with his grandkids including restoring his 1964 corvette to mint condition! His grandsons carry on his love for cars today.
Cheryl remembers being around Dad in the garage as a young child and she loved handing him tools and helping. She came to realize Dad’s influence later in life when the results of a career test suggested she should be a mechanic! Although she didn’t become a mechanic Dad was very excited and proud to celebrate her academic accomplishments including a master’s degree.
My most special memory was the year Dad, and I took an evangelism explosion class together which is designed to train Christians be a witness to others. Dad was my mentor for this program, and we shared lots of time praying, studying, worshiping, and witnessing to others. I will be forever grateful for Dad’s willingness to share the Gospel with me and my family.
Dad faithfully read his bible even in during the last days of his life. I found the following verse on his phone after he went to be with the Lord on October 23, 2021.
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:2-4
