John D. Harris' Obituary
John D. Harris, a devoted family man and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on March 16th,2026, at the age of 89.
Born in 1936, John graduated from Messick High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Shortly after, he married his love and best friend, Susie Harris. Soon after their marriage, John joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Tyndall AFB in Florida, where he served with honor and earned a medal for good conduct.
Following his service, John began his civilian career at Hart’s Bakery, making deliveries just as his father had before him. His strong work ethic and easy rapport with people naturally led him into sales, where he thrived across several industries—from textiles to furniture—before retiring from Haverty’s Furniture after many successful years.
Throughout his life, John was deeply committed to his faith. He served as a Deacon in his church, where he especially enjoyed helping in the nursery. He also coached the church’s women’s basketball team and played on the men’s softball team—alongside Susie, who played on the women’s team.
In retirement, John found joy on the golf course, spending his days playing alongside his best friend and golf partner, Greg Burgett. When he wasn’t golfing, he could be found spending time with his family or watching the latest tournament on the Golf Channel.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John G. and Alice P. Harris, and his beloved wife, Susie Harris.
He is survived by his children, Alan, Pat, and Lee; his sister, Alice Davis; his cousin, Helen Wofford; his grandchildren, Abi, Daniel, Dalton, Carmela, Robert, and Michael; his great-grandchildren, Lydia, Samantha, Marcus, Connor, and Quinn; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom brought him great joy.
The family would like to thank Dad’s many caregivers—Visiting Angels, especially Paul Dille, from whom Dad drew great comfort; the staff at Twin Rivers Assisted Living and Memory Care, who treated him like family; and Merit Hospice, who ensured Dad was always comfortable and at peace.
A celebration of life will be held at Restland Funeral Home in the Abbey Mausoleum on Saturday, March 28th, at 10:30 a.m., with a viewing beginning at 9:30 a.m. Family and friends will gather to honor John’s life and legacy.
John’s life was defined by kindness, faith, humor, and dedication—whether to his work, his friends, or his family. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
