John Pleasant Harwood's Obituary
John P. Harwood, age 93, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017, in Dallas, Texas. John Pleasant Harwood was born March 18, 1924, in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Dr. Garland M. Harwood, Sr. and Margaret Pinchbeck Harwood. A graduate of John Marshall High School, Richmond, Virginia, he attended VPI in Blacksburg, Virginia, for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army. John served 226 Combat Days in the European Theater as Corporal, Battery B, 268th Field Artillery Battalion, 29th Division, U.S. Army. He was on active duty from November 1942 until January 1946 and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze service stars; American Campaign Medal; and World War II Victory Medal. Upon his return following WWII, John received his B.A. from the University of Richmond where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. John was employed by Aetna Life & Casualty Company for more than 30 years and retired from Aetna in 1986. He was a member of Gaston Oaks Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas. On April 26, 1951, John was united in marriage to Edna Henry at First Baptist Church, Front Royal, Virginia. Edna preceded him in death on September 3, 1975. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Dr. Garland M. Harwood, Sr. and Margaret P. Harwood of Richmond, Virginia, and brothers Garland M. Harwood, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia, and Dr. Charles P. Harwood of Highland Springs, Virginia. John is survived by his daughters Mary Stuart Bullard and husband, Andrew C. Bullard, of Woodway, Texas, and Jean H. White of Carrollton, Texas; and by his grandsons, Benjamin P. White and wife, Chelsea, of Dallas, Texas, and John H. White of Lubbock, Texas. There will be a graveside service, 2:00 PM., Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Restland Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. Should anyone wish to send a memorial, the family requests that such be sent to one’s charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
