John " Jerry" Gerald Thompson's Obituary
Jerry Thompson was born September 27, 1929 in the Dallas to John Henry and Evelyn Connor Thompson. Passed away October 13th, 2017. He attended North Dallas High and graduated from Highland Park High. He graduated from UT Austin with a degree in economics. He married Anabel Sharp August 27th, 1949 while both were students at UT. He served in the US Naval Reserve for 20 years, including two aboard a destroyer escort during the Korean War, and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. He began his financial services career as a life insurance agent, then agency Manager. Later, he was president of Modern America Corp., then Executive Benefits Company. Beginning in 1989 he and his son Stuart worked together as financial planners. He was a chartered life underwriter and certified financial planner. He was president of the Dallas Breakfast Optimists Club. Jerry enjoyed listening to classical music and playing his violin. He was an avid golfer, played 138 different golf courses, and a charter member of Bent Tree Country Club. He enjoyed sail boating with his family on White Rock Lake, Lake Texoma, and in the Virgin Islands. He and Ann liked attending concerts and operas, world travel, cruises, and vacations in Kauai. He was a member of the First Unitarian for 63 years. He was preceded by his wife Anabel, who passed away in April 2017. He is survived by his son John Stuart Thompson and daughter Mary Amo; brother C. Gene Thompson and wife Mary; grandchildren; Oliver Schlaffer and wife Yumiko, Gabriel Schlaffer and wife Machiko, Melody Staton and husband Alex, Roselyn Amo, Jeremy Amo, James Amo and five great grandchildren.Service to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at 12:30 PM in The Wildwood Chapel at Restland Funeral Home.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243.
