I am sure sorry about Vernon's passing. Memories of him–his famous white shoes, good looks and high energy and ambition—-him being head over heels and over the moon about meeting and marrying Bonnie—-his tremendous success in his bankruptcy practice—–MY MOST VIVID MEMORY— one cold windy day I ran into him in front of the Federal Building in downtown Dallas. He was pushing a big black baby carriage with some sort of fur rug covering the baby. He was in high spirits. I never saw anyone look more happy , sucessful and proud. My sympathies to his family. My heart is deeply saddened by the passing of my beloved friend, JV. I have known and loved him for almost 22 years. I worked for JV for 18 years and was not just his employee but I was his friend. I thank God for having the pleasure of knowing him and being a part of his life and him a part of mine. I count it an honor and a privilege to have crossed paths with him during this earthly journey. We had many laughs and good times and we leaned on each other during tough times. He will be sorely missed and remembered and loved always. Vernon was my friend. I will miss him, greatly. Once, he needed to go to Houston, immediately, to see his sister. So, I flew him there and back. We went down late in the evening and came back the next afternoon. May the Lord God bless Vernon, and may he bless Bonnie, Chelsea, and Teddy.

The first day on the job reporting to my new boss, Vernon Johnson, he and I got into an argument and with purse in hand, I was making haste to a nearby elevator when he loudly challenged me in his familiar southern drawl sending me the message that I was not of his caliber to meet the challenge. Well, that triggered my "I'll show him" attitude resulting in our teamwork of mass production of Chapter 7 bankruptcy filings. Vernon brought the best out of you when you didn't even know you had it. I was saddened to hear of the loss of J. Vernon, as I had just seen in the grocery store within the last few weeks, and, like always, he had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye, and a happy greeting. He was one of the pioneers of the consumer bankruptcy practice, and was a true businessman, family man, and a person who cared greatly for others, who had battled personal demons, but overcame them and still had a smile on his face.

I knew Vernon from the earliest days of my career as an attorney. My brother John had known him at the Dallas County D.A.'s office. Vernon was a good friend. He adored his children, who are two of the nicest children I've ever met. He was so proud of them. I was proud to be his friend.
