John Freeman Melton's Obituary
Born September 24, 1910, in Lone Oak, Texas. Died August 21, 2008, in Dallas Texas. Dr. Melton graduated from Texas A & M University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1937. He married Nela Shaw on November 27, 1935, in Kaufman, Texas. In 1939, he built Park Cities Animal Hospital and was one of the pioneering small animal veterinarians in Dallas. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Dolly Melton, and by his loving wife of 63 years, Nela. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Terry and Barry Buchanan and Johna and Doug Hinson, and by grand-daughters and husbands Jennifer and Chip Stoicovy, Melissa and David Arkley, and Susan and John O’Neal; grandson John Neill and great-grandson Kyle Reagan. Dr. Melton was a true renaissance man. He was a master craftsman, a gun-smith, a clock maker, a violin and guitar maker, and a boat builder. He had a great interest in photography and built and operated his own darkroom. He designed and built a large telescope, even grinding and polishing the telescope mirror. That instrument was later donated to Pan American University. Somehow he also found time to gather an outstanding stamp collection. He loved his family and his church, reading and studying his Bible, and supporting several ministries. The family would like to thank his special care givers at Medallion Assisted Living Center: Barbara Hatcher, Debra Washington, Cynthia Carr, and Bernice Umeononihu and Chad Nichols of Care Works. Visitation is 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday, August 25, 2008 Memorial Services will be in the McIver Chapel of Wilshire Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on August 25, 2008 Memorials in his name may be made to the Pathways to Ministry program at Wilshire Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas.
