John Newton Peeples Sr.'s Obituary
John Newton Peeples, 87, born October 16, 1930 in Devine, Texas passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018 in Irving, Texas. The son of a pilot and Army Air Corp pilot trainer and a Ladies Sunday School class teacher, John grew up in Galveston and Texas City. John was on the Texas City High School soccer field when he witnessed the mushroom cloud and experienced the aftermath of the famous Texas City explosion of April 16, 1947.While serving our country in the Air Force, John met and married the love of his life, Joyce, and was a faithful husband and loving father of Evelyn and John Jr.John put family first, enjoyed gun shows, and admired motorcycles. He had two big goals in life – raise a Christian family and never cause anyone to stumble “by grumbling and griping”. As a husband and father, or when impacting the lives of others, he faithfully served the Lord embracing various opportunities to make a difference. Some of those opportunities included: distributing Bibles with the Gideons, serving as a deacon and treasurer, and bringing up his children in a Bible believing and preaching church. When asked what inspired him, John once replied, “I take something home from every sermon I hear, going all the way back to boyhood summers spent at brush arbor meetings in Devine, Texas. Good preaching has always been a strong guide to me. I didn’t always do everything I knew I should as a young Christian, but Jesus is a good Shepherd. He could pull me back when I needed it.”He was deeply loved and will be missed by all those fortunate enough to know him.John is survived by his son John Jr. and wife Shirley of Fort Worth, Texas, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
