Dr. John Lewis Rumley Sr.'s Obituary
Dr. John Lewis Rumley passed from this life quietly in his sleep into God’s eternal presence on January 13, 2017. John was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1939 to Grover and Katherine Rumley. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1956 where he had been an All-State football player and outstanding student. After high school, John was the recipient of a full athletic scholarship to play football at Southern Methodist University, where his focus of study was biology. Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1961, John enrolled in the Baylor College of Dentistry. John received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1965 and soon set up his practice in the Park Cities. John ran a successful dental practice for 38 years and was active in, and recognized for, his leadership in the dental community of north Texas. His most humbling recognition was being selected as Dentist of the Year in 1995 by The Texas Academy of General Dentistry. John also served as president of the Dallas County Dental Society from 1988-1989. During his career John was elected as a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, The International College of Dentists, and The American College of Dentists. Not only did John love the science and practice of dentistry, but he also loved his patients and staff. He felt blessed every day to be able to do what he loved. John is survived by his adoring wife of 60 years, Jeanne Beauchamp Rumley, and lovingly remembered by his children: John Rumley, Jr. and wife Jan, Scott Rumley and wife Heather, and Mary Jane Rumley. John was blessed with 6 grandchildren: step-grandchildren, Rachael Boyd and husband Bryan, Andrew Allen and wife Nicole, and grandchildren, Max and Josie Balsley, and Christopher and Reagan Rumley, as well as 2 step great-grandchildren: Emma Boyd and Lucy Boyd. He is also survived by brother, Jerry Rumley and wife Hazel, and brother-in-law, Bill Woodard, M.D., as well as many loving nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Grace Woodard, and his nephew, Jerry Rumley, Jr. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Restland Funeral Home. . A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, January 30, 2016 at Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
