Johnny George Gray's Obituary
Johnny George Gray was born to Hazel and George Gray on July 30, 1951 in Ft. Worth, Texas. After more than two months of courageously fighting his health battle at Dallas Veterans Medical Center, on September 12, 2025 he claimed the ultimate victory. His earthly fight is over, and he now rests in the promise of Scripture: to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
A proud South Oak Cliff Golden Bear, Johnny graduated in 1969. He was on the football team and would often tell a “story” of a play during practice where he “put Harvey Martin on his back.” This “story” is one of many that made family and friends smile, laugh and raise a brow.
After high school, he served his country with two tours in Vietnam with the US Army and upon returning home, he began a life long career at the United States Postal Service. Once retiring from the USPS, he lived a leisurely life of retirement, spending most of his time spoiling his grandchildren.
He experienced love, marrying his high school crush, Sedalia Gray, years after they’d graduated. Reconnecting in their late twenties, they enjoyed throwing parties attending parties, quick trips to Vegas, horse races in Louisiana, dog races in Arkansas and a number of other adventures. They had been married more than 30 years when she passed away in 2012.
Known as JG, Bubba, Pops, Grandpa, Sugar Bear, Gray…he was funny and sometimes a little rough around the edges, he was generous and sometimes very direct, he was stubborn but also kind, thoughtful and sweet.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and George Gray, his wife, Sedalia Gray, and sister, Barbara Gray. He leaves to cherish his memory, daughter and son in-law , LaTress and Shon Peoples, son, Samuel Gray; grandchildren, Sametria Gray, Destinye Gray and Preston Samples. He also leaves brothers and sisters in-law, Walter and Dorothy Jackson, Barbara Kennedy, Terry and Cora Polk, and Regina Austin and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
