My sympathy to the family at this sad time. I worked with him at The Vintage Club when he served on our Board of Directors. He was always insightful and careful in his decisions that would affect the Club and its members. I always admired him. So sorry to learn of his passing. He will be missed by many. RIP. Evelyn Kelsey, Membership Director
From All of Us at KoonsFuller purchased the Garden of Serenity Bouquet for the family of Joseph William Geary Jr..
This past December, Mr. Geary was honored in Washington D.C. for his service during World War II. As part of the program, Mr. Geary?s friends, family, and colleagues had the opportunity to write letters thanking him for his service. Obviously, no letter could sufficiently thank Mr. Geary for his service during the war. Even such great honors as the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Legion of Honor were not enough to thank him for his service. Nevertheless, I know a lot of us were grateful for the chance to write letters letting Mr. Geary know how much we admired and appreciated him. Our entire country owes Mr. Geary a great deal of gratitude for his service during the war, but those of us that worked with him owe him gratitude on a much more personal level. Searching around online I found that Mr. Geary?s citation for the Distinguished Flying Cross states that ?by his extreme skill and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Geary has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.? Those words certainly apply to his actions on October 7, 1944, but they are equally applicable to his life after the war. Because Mr. Geary spent his life applying his ?extreme skill and devotion to duty? to the practice of law, we are all able to come to work at such a wonderful place each day. One of the great perks of working at Geary, Porter & Donovan is hearing all of the stories people tell about Mr. Geary. Most of the stories center on his antics as one of the toughest, most aggressive lawyers in town. Mr. Geary invited me to tag along on a case or two, so I am happy to have picked up a couple of these stories that I will be telling for the rest of my career. However, one thing that is never adequately captured in these stories is Mr. Geary?s kindness. Simple gestures like inviting me and my wife to dinner and a show meant the world to me. In 35 years from now, when I am hopefully retired, some of my fondest memories will be the time I spent in Mr. Geary?s office talking about politics, life, and whatever else was on his mind. Mr. Geary?s service during the war was remarkable, but his life after the war was just as remarkable, if not more so. I mentioned much of this in my Honor Flight letter to Mr. Geary, but I wanted Mike and Carol, Justin and Monica, and the rest of the Geary family to know how much we all admired and appreciated him. Mr. Geary was a legend and will be truly missed. JD and Susan Hannagan
Colleen, I was so very sorry to hear of the passing of your father. It sure has been a long time, but I often think of you and your children. As you know, I worked at the firm and did know your father just a little. I'll be keeping you all in my prayers. Beth Colvin Koelbel.
Lisa and I send our heartfelt prayers to Kathie , James and the entire Geary family. Reading Joes Obit really puts one own life and accomplishments into perspective. What a man! We are so sorry we will not see you guys at the funeral as we will be in Austin with Kristin. Please know we love you and think of your family often. Larry DeLong
Kelly, I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was a remarkable man who left a legacy of service to his country and to his beloved Dallas. May your memories be everlasting and a comfort to you and your family. Carol Seay
Joe Geary was an exceptional man, an exceptional lawyer, and a loyal and beloved partner. I had several cases against Joe in the 1980s. He was as tough as his reputation. Although I was a young female trial lawyer when female trial lawyers were uncommon and not particularly appreciated, Joe was always respectful — even when he dubbed me ?the barracuda.? Lawyers who were unlucky enough to know Joe only as an adversary, saw only part of the man. One of Joe's former partners once told me that no former partner of Joe Geary ever had anything bad to say about Joe; I believe that to be true. As tough an adversary as Joe was, he was even more determined to be supportive of his partners, his employees, and his law firm. He was kind to staff and made the law firm feel like a family. Joe's clients loved him too. In fact, clients loved him so much that they were still asking Joe to take on new cases while Joe was in his late 80s even when the cases could take years to complete. It was no surprise to me to learn that Joe was highly decorated by both the French and the US governments for his service in WWII. Joe was fearless, self-sacrificing, and loyal. Joe was not just the very best of the greatest generation, he was the hero in that elite group. The rest of us can only aspire to his bigger than life character. I learned much from Joe, not the least of which included lessons on how to live life. Joe Geary was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Joe?s family has my gratitude for sharing him with the rest of us and my deepest sympathy for this enormous loss. Dotty Vidal
To the family of Joe and Charlotte; I remember them with great respect. My husband Charlie Spencer worked in the firm for 27 years, and he always felt welcomed there. I remember the trips to Lake Texoma every spring, and enjoyed the lake house. Oddly, just 2 weeks later, Charlie has passed away, January 27. They will be getting re-acquainted there in heaven! Carol Spencer
Jan and Wes Putnam had the privilege of meeting Joe late in his life and had lots of great fun and cherish many good memories of him and our dear friend, Colleen. He was one of the finest men we've ever met and we will mourn his passing. Our deepest sympathy to his wonderful family and to those who had the chance to work with him and be close to this awesome gentleman during his time on earth.
