Colonel Joseph A. Shewski (Ret)'s Obituary
Joseph (Joe) Andrew Shewski, 91, of Dallas, Texas, passed away in his sleep at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas on Sunday, July 21, 2019. He was born January 5, 1928 in Bass Junction, Indiana to Leo and Mary (Folenga) Shewski. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betty A. Shewski; his sister June (Joe) Skibinski; his sister Betty (Vic) Biocic; his brother Walt (Lois) Shewski; and his second wife Bonnie Eimann-Shewski.Joe was a 28-year veteran with the Army Corp of Engineers, a former Texas Professional Engineer, Deputy Director of the Dallas Water Department, and a long-time resident of Lake Highlands in Dallas. His distinguished military engineering career included assignments to: the rebuilding of Germany and Korea; the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Red Stone Arsenal, AL; Fort Leavenworth, KS; France; two Vietnam tours; River Ridge Munitions Depot, IN; the Pentagon; and finally Dallas. His last military assignment was as the Deputy Commander of the Southwestern Division of the US Army Corp of Engineers. After retiring from the military, he became the Deputy Director of the Dallas Water Department and held that position for ten years.His passions in life were family, traveling, fishing, gardening, and bridge.Joe is survived by his four children: Debbie Williams of Appomattox, VA; David (Linda) Shewski of Sarasota, FL; Brian (Janet) Shewski of Plano, TX; and Karen (Roger) Hohnstein of Dallas, TX; nine grandchildren, Chris (Tina) Spano, Julia (Barry) Marcus, Teri Shewski, Eric Shewski, Trevor (Libby) Shewski, Kelsey (Andrew) Reinhart, Lauren Shewski-Higgs, Kelly Shewski, and Emily Hohnstein; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.Graveside services will be held at the DFW National Cemetery at 10 AM on Friday, July 26th. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Veteran’s charity of your choice or the American Heart Association.
