Mrs. Joyce Little Tharp's Obituary
THARP, JOYCE LITTLE born August 25, 1917 in Altair, TX to Robert O. & Lena Simpson Little and passed away July 23, 2007 in Dallas. Joyce was an honor graduate of Webster High School and was active in all sports. She held the Harris Co. tennis singles championship in 1933 & 1938. Attended University of Houston while working as a paralegal for the firm of Jones, Jones & McCullough. Joyce married James Allen Tharp on June 7, 1941 and moved to Dallas, working for F & D, then CB Agency, and AJA Assoc. She obtained her CPCU Certification in 1952. Active member of CPCU Society on local and national levels. Served as the first woman president of Dallas Chapter 1963-64. Was a longtime active member of I.W.D. In 1956, Joyce was one of five women to be featured in Charm (now Glamor) magazine issue on Dallas working women. She was also listed as Who’s Who of American Women, 1977-78, retired in 1978 as VP of RBJones of Texas. After retirement she remained an active member of the Dallas Power Squadren (DPS), writing the gossip column for The Watch Below between 1992 and 2006. Received the Bob Osborne Award for outstanding service to DPS. Member of Unity Church of Dallas, Women’s Board Dallas CPCU, Dallas Hall Society at SMU, MS Aquatics Group at Presbyterian CVC. Joyce loved people and will be remembered for having a bright smile and keen sense of humor. She is preceded in death by her husband, James A. Tharp, Sr. and survived by her son, James A. Tharp, Jr.; daughter in law, Jacquelyn Tharp; grandchildren, Chad Allen Tharp, Troy Allen Tharp, Bridget Ann Tharp, Michele Elaine Tharp, Ross Allen Tharp; brother Robert Little & wife Madeline of Kingwood, TX; former daughter in law, Sharon G. Tipton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be at 12:30 PM, Friday, July 27, 2007 at Restland Wildwood Chapel.
