Juanita (Nita) Abel Stover's Obituary
STOVER, JUANITA (NITA) ABEL born May 28, 1927 and passed away February 23, 2014. Preceded in death by her parents, Frank H. and Mary Frances Abel; brothers, Frank and Don; husband, Jerry S. Stover, and two baby daughters. Nita is survived by her son, Bob Locker; daughter, Laura Locker-Homer; stepsons, Sterling Stover and Bruce Stover, 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; many nieces and nephews. She was a member of Dallas Women’s Club, past President of Village Gardens. Nita, a Life Member of the Dallas Southern Memorial Association, served as president from 1993 to 1995. DSMA, founded in 1922 and still active, contributed significantly to the preservation of Southern history and culture in Dallas through gifts of the Robert E. Lee double equestrian bronze statue, the design and furnishing of Arlington Hall and the Hibiscus Fountain in Turtle Creek. Nita’s DSMA presidency coincided with the formation of the Lee Park & Arlington Hall Conservancy. The City of Dallas awarded exclusive authority to the Conservancy to raise funds for restoration of the Hall and Park, and Nita served on the Conservancy Board and in numerous committee positions from its inception. She and husband Jerry worked tirelessly to forge a secure future for Lee Park and helped bring together public and private visionaries to that end. The Veranda and formal patio area of the Hall are named in honor of their contributions. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, February 27, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home. Service will be held Friday, February 28, 2014 at 3:30 PM at Highland Park Presbyterian Church. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s association Greater Dallas.
