Joann (whose own mother was an incredible dancer, professor, and head of the SMU dance dept for many years) and I danced together. Like many of Karen's former students, I know the technique Karen gave me in nearly 10 years of classes, have sustained me in various venues, including teaching people who are blind or visually impaired how to own, and move through space, getting from one point to another efficiently and gracefully. What a gift she was!

Karen, We will miss you so so much! We were neighbors for many years and talked and laughed a lot in the alley at the back of our houses. You were such a wonderful neighbor and friend. We will miss the way you would decorate your back window for Christmas, giving our alley some Christmas cheer! Thanks for listening to all our stories. We will forever miss you!! To the family of Karen Kriete, my thoughts and prayers are sent your way. Karen taught me so much in her ballet classes at SMU when I was completing my MFA in choreography and performance. In fact on this past Saturday I was discussing how after I left SMU and went to teach at LSU, I experienced the cutting of the dance program 3 months after I arrived. Seven months later I received a phone call from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama saying they had received a recommendation from Professor Karen Kriete saying I would be a good candidate for starting a dance program. Karen's belief in me will always live within my heart. As I reflect upon her passing, I see her sitting on that long bench in the dance studio in front of the mirror with her legs crossed and her ponytail hanging over her shoulder ready to begin another fascinating ballet class. She will be missed by so many. With love and gratitude to Karen … Lesa Rogers Broadhead
