Steve and Newkom family, We were so sorry to hear of Karen?s passing; our thoughts and prayers are with you. The obituary honoring Karen was so moving, and I thought of various memories as I read it. It was probably during the mid-90?s that our families? lives intersected most. At one point, John and Garrett were on the same baseball team, and I remember sitting with Karen in the stands often. What a devoted fan Karen was of her kids and I?m sure her grandkids, but I remember what a strong supporter she was of every child playing. Karen and I also served on PTA together at West, although Karen?s contributions and leadership make mine pale in comparison. There was no fiercer advocate for our neighborhood schools, and surely the esteem in which they?re held today is largely due to Karen?s work during some years that were challenging. I smiled when I read of Karen?s decorating skills and recalled a Christmas home tour when you all lived on Shenandoah. What an exquisite decorator! Elegant, classy, beautiful, and always, always smiling and gracious?that?s what I think of when I think of Karen.
