Kathryn Buckley Houseman's Obituary
Kathryn Buckley Houseman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2020, at the age of 96. Born in Oklahoma City, Katy moved to Dallas with her family and attended Highland Park High School, where she was a cheerleader and class favorite. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and married her college sweetheart Don when he returned from the war in 1945.
As newlyweds, Katy and Don lived briefly in Temple before returning to Dallas to start a family. Katy raised five children and they, along with her 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, were her pride and joy. At family weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries, Katy always came prepared with witty, insightful, and humorous poems that she wrote herself and recited by memory.
Katy loved gardening, golf, and playing bridge with friends. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, Dallas Country Club, and St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, where she was on the altar guild for many years. She also served on the boards of The Dallas Woman’s Club, The Dallas Garden Club, and Dallas Junior League.
Katy loved traveling with Don to their favorite hideouts at Little Sandy in East Texas, the Channels Ranch in Ennis, Montana, their golf cottage at Horseshoe Bay, and Casahombre near Sherman, Texas. Their adventures and misadventures are too many to list, but needless to say there was never a dull moment.
Katy was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Don Houseman, her parents, George and Sadie Beall Buckley, and her sister, Nancy Buckley Raley. She is survived by her brother, Lon Buckley, and five children, Nancy (Howell) Harralson, Donna (Wayne) Tenney, Frank (Ann) Houseman, Lon (Julie) Houseman, Louise (Tom) Gresham, 13 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren.
A private memorial service for the family will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church with a graveside service at Restland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, the Highland Park Education Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
