Kathryn Samples' Obituary
Kathryn Viola Samples, age 98, passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2025, in Mesquite, Texas, with her loving daughter and son-in-law by her side.
Kathryn was born on December 28, 1926, in Leonard, Texas, to John H. Shaffer and Myrtle Mae Morris. She made Mesquite her home for the past 57 years, building a life full of love, laughter, and strong family ties.
In her early years, Kathryn worked at Woolworth’s, where she was known for her kind smile and strong work ethic. She later dedicated herself to raising her three daughters, devoting her life to creating a warm and loving home. Her family always came first, and she cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother above all.
She was a faithful member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church, where she found deep community and joy.
Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 72 years, J.C. Samples; her older brother, J.H.; and her younger sister, Martha Jean “Motsy.”
She is survived by her daughters: Twila Durrett and husband Ken of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; Sharon Jarriel and husband Johnny of Okeechobee, Florida; and Pam Frantz and husband Monty of Mesquite, Texas.
She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Cathy Stewart and husband Don, Kimberly Espinosa and husband Geoffrey, Jon Jarriel and wife Jenn, David Jarriel and wife Jennifer, Rebecca McKim and husband Zack, Jessica Watkins and husband Josh, Tyler Frantz and wife Britany, and Joy Jarriel. In addition, she leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren and countless others whose lives were touched by her grace, warmth, and kindness.
A celebration of Kathryn’s life will be held on Thursday, July 17, at Calvary Hill Baptist Church, 3300 La Prada Drive, Mesquite, Texas. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., with funeral services immediately following.
Interment Restland Cemetery Monday, July 21, 2025 at 2:00pm.
