Kathryn "Kay" Wunderlich's Obituary
Kathryn Thompson Wunderlich, or Kay to all her friends and family, passed away at 100 years old. Kay died peacefully at home in Richardson, Texas, on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. She was born the only daughter of James & Donna Thompson on Friday, January 27, 1922, in Moline, Illinois. Raised in Rock Island, Illinois, Kay attended Rock Island High School and Brown’s Business College where she graduated first in her class.
She met Donald Carl Wunderlich, the love of her life, at her favorite roller skating rink.
Kay and Don married in 1944 and celebrated sixty years of marriage until Don’s passing in 2005. They were proud parents of: Daniel (Margaret, deceased) of Terre Haute, Indiana; Steve (Belinda) of Richardson, Texas; and Robert (Joan), also of Richardson. After Don’s death, Kay lived alone until her passing.
Kay worked at various jobs, including the Pentagon, as she and Don traveled around during his military and college days.
They settled in Riverdale, Illinois, for twenty years before Don was transferred to Richardson with Atlantic Richfield. Wherever Kay lived, she was active in the community – PTA board member, homeroom mother, Garden Club, card clubs, Women’s Club and Organ Group – she never met a stranger. Kay would be waiting in a long grocery line and would know everyone in line by the time it was her turn to check out. She had too many wonderful friends to name them all but unfortunately, she outlived most of them.
Kay was very proud of her grandchildren Brent Wunderlich, Aaron Wunderlich, Erikah Fox, Adriane Mendoza, Donald Wunderlich, Adam Wunderlich, Brittany Wunderlich and Berkley Wunderlich, her step-grandchildren Kimmi Wozniak, Jaden Vargas and Ted Vargas, Jr. She also dearly loved her eleven great-grandchildren.
Kay’s family is grateful for the loving care she received from Mandy Anderson, Christine Mudencda and all the caregivers with Cerna Healthcare.
Family will receive friends between 1:30-3:00PM on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at Restland Funeral Home.
A memorial service will commence at 1:00PM on Thursday, December 15, 2022, in the Chapel at First United Methodist Church of Richardson. Dr. Scot Bontrager will lead this service.
Kay will join her beloved Don at rest in a private entombment at Restland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kay’s memory should be made to the First United Methodist Church of Richardson. (www.fumcr.com)
