Kelvin Lamonte Pleasants' Obituary
On Monday morning, April 15, 2019, Kelvin Lamont Pleasants transitioned to his heavenly home. He was the 2nd child and only son of the late Gustava and Lorraine Pleasants. He was the spitting image of his father. Kelvin was preceded in death by his sister – Wanda M. King, brothers-in-law – Levi W. King Jr. and Limuel Thomas Jr., father-in-law Haywood Cousins Jr. and a dear friend Anna Henry.The name that you called Kelvin indicated how long you knew him. Family and childhood friends called him “Monty”. As a young man he decided to go by Lamont. Then years later, he preferred his first name.Monty was educated in the Roanoke City School system. He graduated from William Fleming High School in 1973. He attended Richland Community College in Dallas.Monty was reared in a Christian home. He grew up in Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church and was actively involved. As a young adult, he became a member of Loudon Ave Christian Church under the pastorate of Rev. William Lee. Upon relocating to Texas, he joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church. But he sometimes visitedFirst Baptist Church of Hamilton Park.During his life, Monty worked in the retail, railroad, information technology and medical industries. While working as a physical therapy assistant at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, he met his wife Romonia. They married in 1980 and one child was born to this union. Monty referred to his daughter, Meaghen, as “Punkin”. She is the poster child for being a “daddy’s girl.” Monty was quite proud of Meaghen’s accomplishments. One of her significant achievements was receiving her Master’s Degree in Nursing. In 2017, Monty gained the title of “PaPa”. He absolutely loved his new role of being a grandfather. Harper brought him such great joy! Other people may have had grandchildren, but he had the only SUPER grandchild. He called her “Gracie Boo” or “Punkin #2”. Whenever Monty talked about Harper, you could hear the excitement in his voice.Although Monty spent most of his life in the Dallas area, he always considered Roanoke as home. Monty regularly communicated with family and friends in Roanoke as well as other locations throughout theThe United States. Monty contacted you just to say hello or to recognize birthdays and other special occasions. If you were experiencing any challenges, his support was unwavering. You could always depend on his encouraging words.Monty enjoyed cooking, playing pool and darts, singing and listening to music. Also, he was a die-hard Cowboys fan. During the NFL season, you would hear him say “How bout them boys” even when they lost!Monty touched the lives of many people. Everyone that met Monty quickly learned that he LOVED to talk! He never met a stranger. People have said: “he always made me feel special”; “his presence was unforgettable”; “he always had a smile”; “he was always friendly”; “he had a hearty laugh”…Monty never let anything steal his joy.
