Kenneth "Ken" Kimbrell's Obituary
KIMBRELL, KENNETH “KEN” was born April 24th, 1933 in Arp, Texas, and passed away Friday, January 31, 2014, at the age of 80. He was an extraordinary son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to all he loved. He is survived by wife, Phyllis Kimbrell, daughter, Krista Kimbrell, grandchildren, Brittani Mathis and Hunter Evans, brother Hershel Kimbrell and sister Eva Alexander. He was preceded in death by his father, Vergil Kimbrell, mother and step-father Melinda and Roy Reeves, sister Joy Northam, brother Don Reeves and son, Kevin Kip Kimbrell. He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and played football at East Texas State University. He went on to earn both his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from East Texas State. Kimbrell served his country in Korea as a member of the Armed Forces from 1955-1958. Coach Kimbrell began his coaching career at Carrollton High School in 1959. During his 20-year career he was also line coach at Hillcrest High School and Head Coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas. Coaching was not just a job to him but a passion to help mold young men’s lives. He felt athletics could play an important part in the development of young men into outstanding citizens. After leaving coaching in 1979, he was a member of the DISD Youth Action Division until retiring in 1993 at the age of 60. Upon retiring Kimbrell became an avid golfer and enjoyed the past time with friends, former students and his son, Kip. He also became a member of the Rockwall YMCA making many new friends and took pride in regular workouts. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 from 1:30pm – 2:30pm at Restland Memorial Chapel. Services will be held immediately following visitation at Restland Memorial Chapel.
