My uncle, LR, was a true blessing to me and many. During the last conversation I had with him while he was in the hospital, I told him with great honesty, he is one of my favorite uncles. As a kid, I would get so excited when I heard he was coming for a visit. Now that he has journeyed onward to Heaven, I’ve reflected on why these previous statements are so very true. Please allow me to explain why he is so dear to my heart.
LR knew how to be fully present with me and actively listen with a great interest. When I was little, he would take a knee or bend down to look me right in the eye and make me feel as if I was the only one in the room. He would give me that gentle smile and make me feel special. He always encouraged me, especially regarding my interest in art and travel.
LR knew stamp collecting was a wonderful blend of these two interests and got me started on my stamp collections. This activity combined with LR’s beautiful and exotic postcards from all over the globe engendered a desire in me to see the world, which was part of why I joined the United states Air Force.
As a veteran in Army intelligence, he was encouraging to me as I was going into intelligence service myself. I remember he was concerned for me when I was being deployed on my first covert operation in Central America. He gave me some wise advice that came from his own experience that proved to be very useful.
LR is one of my heroes. He had a college education and was a successful businessman that traveled the world. He was smart, well spoken, gentle and kind. There is no doubt I wanted to be like him. He was, and still is, a great inspiration to me! However, I must confess that part of why I got so excited as a kid when he would come to visit, is he would always bring me some pretty awesome gifts. Like a gas powered engine remote controlled airplane!
I love you LR! Thank you for everything and for being the very special person you are!
Love always, Joe
