Mr. Lance Clark "Bo" Hicks' Obituary
Lance Clark “Bo” Hicks died Wednesday, March 1, 2023. He suffered a completely unexpected cardiac arrest the week prior that ultimately caused a non-recoverable brain injury.
He was born on February 13, 1964, in Dallas, Texas, the city he deeply loved. A blue-eyed towhead growing up in the Lakewood area of East Dallas, “Bo” was a loving and kind boy, a homebody that loved Batman, King Kong, and ROCK N’ ROLL. As a young teenager, he won an electric guitar in a raffle, and his life was never the same. He formed a garage band and, although he did not know it, he was the coolest guy in school.
Lance attended William Lipscomb Elementary School and J.L. Long Middle School, and was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School – Class of 1982. While attending North Texas State University to study Radio-Television-Film, Lance worked at Sound Warehouse on Greenville Avenue, where he was offered an internship with RCA Records. He accepted and began his career in the record industry. He went on to work in sales in both Dallas and Houston for A&M Records and, eventually, Polygram Records. He had many unique adventures in this part of his career – not just meeting his musical heroes but getting to know many on a personal level, and yes, some of those adventures were wild.
As technology changed, the record industry changed, and he began selling advertising for “The Met,” the then competition to the Dallas Observer. One night while visiting one of his advertisers, a nightclub, he discovered that their DJ had not shown up. He volunteered to help out for fun. By the end of the night, he had a great time, a hunk of cash in his pocket, and the intent to change careers.
Lance spent more than 25 years as a DJ in various Gentlemen’s clubs. Not a typical profession, but one he was very happy with as it allowed him the freedom to live life the way he wanted. He spent his time off traveling to see his favorite artists perform in some of the country’s most iconic venues. For several of those years, he continued to study the guitar and developed a love of Jazz. He was often invited to sit in on sessions around town.
As a man, even while living his Rock n’ Roll life, he was just as he was as a boy, loving, loyal, kind, generous, and dedicated to his family and friends.
Lance truly lived his best life.
He is survived by his parents, Gayle and Mary Lou Hicks of Dallas, Texas; his sister, Lorna Hicks Branciforte, and Brother-in-law, John Branciforte of Orlando, Florida; Cousin, Saundra Fleming of Seattle, Washington; Cousin, Sharon Fleming and her partner, Denes Vigh of Houston, Texas; Cousin Earl Smith of Dallas, Texas; Step-Grandmother, Linda Stevens of McKinney, Texas; Great-Uncle, Doyle Ellison of Ore City, Texas; Great-Aunt, Lenova Ellison of Desoto, Texas; Cousin, Morgan Wells (Irene Keliher) of Seattle, Washington; Cousin, Egan Kolb (Lesley Murray) of Austin, Texas; Step-Uncles, Dick (Lori) Stevens of McKinney, Texas and Mike (Kara) Stevens of Frisco, Texas; Cousin, Paul (Lori) Chapman of Greenville, South Carolina and many more beloved cousins and extended family.
