Mr. Larry Edsel Ramey's Obituary
Larry Edsel Ramey, age 88, passed away peacefully in Dallas on August 3rd. Larry was born on
February 19, 1935 in Ashland, Kentucky as the middle of three children and only son of Renny Ramey and Nell Fitch Ramey. He spent his youth in his hometown and was a proud graduate of Ashland High School. He remained close to many of his high school friends and attended every class reunion through the years. He attended the University of Kentucky, where he pledged Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Always possessing a sense for adventure and exploration, he made the decision to transfer to Southern Methodist University, where he majored in Insurance and was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was an active member of ATO at SMU as well, and remained involved with the SMU chapter for a number of years, even serving for a time as the Chapter’s advisor. While a student at SMU he met and married Kay Hughes, and they made their home in North Dallas while he embarked on his career in insurance. Their two children, John and Kathleen, were born in Dallas in 1963 and 1965.
Larry enjoyed a successful career in insurance, partnering with the late Pollard Simons to start the Simons-Ramey Insurance Agency, then later starting the Larry E. Ramey Insurance Agency. He was a member of Optimist Interntaional, and spent many of his weekends with disadvantaged youths, taking them to sportng events and car and boat shows. An avid football fan, he enjoyed many SMU Mustangs and Dallas Cowboys games at the Coton Bowl and later at Texas Stadium. He was a longtime member of St. Michael And All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas and was also a longtime volunteer at Canterbury House on the SMU Campus, where he would spend time working with college students who were dealing with substance abuse challenges.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Renny and Nell Ramey, his beloved sisters, JoAnn Halleck and Donna Miller, brothers in law Ronald Halleck and Ralph E. Miller, and his daughter, Kathleen Ann Ramey. He is survived by his son, John F. Ramey, daughter in law, Christa Ramey, grandson, Max Ramey, granddaughter, Kathleen Theobald, his nieces, nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. There will be a private family inurnment at Restland Cemetery on October 14th, followed by a public celebration of life at 11:00 am at Kessler Park United Methodist Church, located at 1215 Turner Avenue, Dallas, TX
