LaRue Hammonds Stott's Obituary
LaRue Hammonds Stott, age 92 of Dallas, Texas entered God’s heavenly kingdom just as she lived her life, with dignity and grace, on Thursday, July 27, 2017. LaRue was born the eighth child to a growing family on a farm in Joy, Texas on January 27, 1925, to her papa, Thomas Cleveland Hammonds and and her mama, Birdie Ann. Her papa was a Baptist preacher and her mama a jill-of-all-trades; farmer, seamstress, mother of ten. LaRue married George Stott, a decorated Army veteran, on December 14, 1947. They spent most of their married life in Denton. George was a career educator; while LaRue spent most of her days with the second love of her life, duplicate bridge. She achieved her Life Master distinction in 1972 and Diamond Life Master in 2010. They moved to Dallas in 1981 where she quickly assumed her position as matriarch of the Dallas duplicate bridge scene. Nanny (as many called her), was known for her patient, gracious and warm demeanor, however at the bridge table she garnered the nickname, “The Silent Assassin.” She took such pride in her appearance and never left the house without a richly color-coordinated ensemble, from her earrings to her shoes. She was as inclusive as she was kind, as caring as she was humble. She never knew a stranger, and if something mattered to you, it mattered to her. She heaped the greatest pride and truly beamed over the accomplishments of her friends and family. LaRue adored the bridge community, and it adored her right back. Her social calendar was exceedingly busier than most (even her much, much younger friends) and she brought such a calming yet vivacious warmth everywhere she went. Her strength, both mental and physical, was something to be reckoned with, even in her final days. Those who knew her are and will continue to be blessed by her legacy. She lived a life we should all strive to emulate. She was preceded in death by her husband George, 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Survived by her daughters and sons-in-law; Susan Wilkerson (Jerry), Martha Griffith (Buddy) and Mary Barnes (Chris), her grandchildren Aaron and Zack Wilkerson, Matt Springer (Carolynn), Sarah Leone (Joel), Jordan and Beau Barnes, her great-grandchildren, Emily and Garrett Springer, her sisters Birdie Yelvington, Hattie Fae Holder, brother Tommy Hammonds and 22 nieces and nephews. A celebration and testament to her life will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 3:00 pm, Restland Memorial, Dallas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Faith Presbyterian, Communities and Service at www.prescs.org/give-now/. The entire family wishes to extend great gratitude to all those who have loved and cared for her. You enriched her life beyond words. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
