LaVerne Smith's Obituary
LaVerne Smith, born on August 16, 1927, in Dallas, Texas, passed away on June 8, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and remarkable achievements.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Moore, son Marcus Smith and wife Holly Lagace as well as her grandchildren Cheri Moore, Stacey Mier, Rebekah Orosco, Stephen Moore, Heather Lagace, Lauren Lagace and 13 cherished great-grandchildren.
LaVerne's achievements were many and varied, reflecting her dynamic presence and the impact she had on her community. She was instrumental in starting numerous Red Hat Society Chapters across various cities, bringing together women to celebrate life after fifty with gusto and camaraderie. Her leadership skills shone brightly as she served as President of a Chapter of the American Business Women Association, where she advocated for women's professional development and empowerment.
A proud Member of the Historical Society, LaVerne was deeply invested in preserving the rich tapestry of local history for future generations. Her dedication to heritage and culture was a testament to her love for the community.
She attended Crozier Tech and SMU College. She had a diverse career as she worked in the film industry and served as an accountant for several companies. Additionally, she was an entrepreneur, founding Day Star and Laurel Leaf, Inc. LaVerne continued working until the age of 80, retiring in 2008. Her hobbies included candle making, collecting various items, painting, and traveling. LaVerne explored every state in the USA except Alaska and one other state. She also enjoyed traveling to Europe, Mexico, and Canada.
LaVerne was affiliated with both the Methodist and Baptist Churches. As a very active member of the United Methodist Church, her faith was a cornerstone of her existence. She embodied the church's values of compassion, service, and fellowship, often leading by example and inspiring others to follow in her footsteps of kindness and generosity.
LaVerne's life was a mosaic of meaningful endeavors, each piece a story of dedication, leadership, and love. LaVerne had an infectious laugh, being a positive, upbeat person looking at the best in people. She will be greatly missed.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at the Wildwood Chapel in Restland Funeral Home, Dallas, TX. Viewing begins at 9:00 AM, followed by the service at 10:00 AM.
