Smitty hired me as a technical writer when I had no technical writing experience, just experience with the financial software that his team was documenting. He took a chance on me and I'll forever be grateful -- my career change from accounting to technical writing was the best professional move I ever made, and I've never looked back. I owe it all to Smitty. He was a kind, intelligent, witty man, and a great boss.

I met Lee Roy (Smitty) soon after I joined TI in late 1966. We had more contact with each other when we both moved to the TI South building in about 1970. I would get help from Smitty on programming and control cards.
A lot of people got help from him on computer programming and financial systems at TI.
He was considered an expert on these systems. Smitty and I would see each other off and on over the years.
We saw each other more when we both moved to TI's Plano Spring Creek facility. We would take breaks together and talk about people, cows, land, and farming. We both retired in 2001. That is when we met his wonderful Beverly, and he met my wonderful Margaret. We really enjoyed being around Smitty and Beverly. We tried to see them at least once a year. Going to each others place and visiting and going out to eat.
Margaret and I will truly miss Smitty, And we will try to stay in touch with Beverly and the family.
