Lenora Jeanette Cates' Obituary
CATES, LENORA JEANETTE born in Pamplico, SC on March 9th, 1938. She is preceded in death by her mother, Lenora James DeWitt Huggins, and father, Cordie DeWitt. Lenora is survived in death by her husband, Johnnie Jake Cates; daughters, Candace Jeanette O’Neill (wife of James O’Neill) and Catherine Carol Peinado; grandchildren, Ethan Kos, Finn Kos, Scarlett Peinado, and Ava Peinado; sisters, Marilyn Altman (wife of Lenair Altman) and Sybil Bennett (wife of the late James Bennett). Graduated from Johnsonville High School in 1954 and was voted Most Outgoing her senior year of high school. She played basketball for the Johnsonville High School Flashes. In 1953, won the Betty Crocker Homemaker of the Year Award for the state of South Carolina and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. She was a stewardess for American Airlines for approximately seven years during the late 1950s and early 1960s she was a substitute teacher for DISD during the late 1970s and early 1980s and volunteered extensively for her daughters’ schools. She later went on to have a career in the Retail Merchandising field. She eventually retired from Hanes Hosiery. Service will be held Friday, February 28, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Restland Wildwood Chapel.
