LieNie Poh's Obituary
LieNie Poh was born July 16, 1930 in Gresik, Indonesia, where she was raised under Dutch colonial rule. After the end of the Japanese occupation and WWII, her family emigrated to the Netherlands. There she pursued her English degree at the University of Leiden and met the love of her life, Bing “Lex” Han Poh. They were married in 1957 and moved to the United States in 1960 for better opportunities and to raise their daughters.
She worked various jobs as a teletypist for Sears & Roebuck catalog, legal secretary, and bookkeeper for the Oklahoma Bar Association. She worked for the Oklahoma Supreme Court for 16 years, eventually becoming the Chief Financial Officer.
LieNie was an avid gardener, seamstress, competitive bridge player and gourmet cook. Many of her American friends remembered fondly of being introduced to “unusual and delicious” dishes from her vast Chinese and Indonesian repertoire. She was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and volunteered with the American Cancer Society.
LieNie and Bing loved to travel, their passion abetted by his involvement with Rotary International. They enjoyed experiencing new places, but they truly loved visiting their family and friends in Indonesia and the Netherlands. An unforgettable Alaskan cruise with the entire family for their 50th wedding anniversary was their last travel adventure.
Despite chronic orthopedic infirmities, LieNie remained a gracious and elegant lady who never spoke an unkind word. Her family was the greatest recipient of her full attention, unconditional love and adoration. She was an unyielding champion for her 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and, also, extended her advice and support to her many friends.
LieNie Poh joined her husband of 60 years on January 30, 2021, after a short illness. Reunited in Heaven, they continue to look after all their loving family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Han Giok Wan (Anna) and Liem Kian Song (Anthony), and her sister, Han-Liem Hiang Nio. She is survived by her 2 daughters-RuLan (Robert) Hebeler and SueLin Poh; 5 grandchildren-Sarah (Ryan) Ritsema, Travis Hebeler, Katie Hebeler, Leah (Nathan) Lents, and Elena Lents; and 3 great-grandchildren-Jackson, Sophia and Olivia Ritsema.
Memorial service details are pending with Restland Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, our family would be honored if you would make a contribution in her name to the Dallas Arboretum.
