Linda Nuckols Brooks' Obituary
Our beloved Linda, Mother, Mimi slipped peacefully from this life on April 17, 2017 to be re-united in heaven with the love of her life Ben. Linda was born on January 5, 1929, in Hillsboro, Texas, in a house that was brought in from the country. The house was her home growing up and continued to be the home of her parents into the mid-seventies. Her story is much like that of many of the “Greatest Generation.” She was still in high school when a handsome, “sophisticated” Navy man from Blooming Grove, Texas came back from the War and swept her off her feet. He lived with a family across the street while going to Hill Junior College and as Mother said “always seemed to show up for her mother’s fried chicken at Sunday dinners.” After high school, she went to Texas Woman’s University where she graduated with a major in English and a minor in education. Ben and Linda were married in 1948 and over the next 15 years moved nine times to three different states along with having three children. As Mother related, Dad would pick out the house, some good and some not so good, that she then made into a home. They finally “settled” in Dallas and bought a house in Lake Highlands in 1965. She selected “the” one and lived there for 52 years. While raising children, packing and unpacking, she taught high school English at Midland High School and Richardson High School. She was devoted to Ben and always put family first. She enjoyed traveling and playing bridge with her friends. Her home was always decorated for the season and she always had everything perfect for every occasion. She particularly enjoyed her Sunday School class at Northway Christian Church. Linda is preceded in death by her parents Samuel Howard Nuckols and Gladys Glaze Nuckols and her husband of 60 years Ben A. Brooks, Jr. She is survived by her loving sister and best friend Patricia Nuckols Acrea; three children, Ben A Brooks, III (Kathy), Sharon Brooks Crowder (Ken) and Cyndi Brooks Hinckley (Bill); eight grandchildren, Bevan Rhine Liverman (Chris), Allison Brooks (Jeff), Brian Brooks (Michelle), Bobby Doherty (Melissa), Brooks Doherty (Angela), Ben Doherty (Emily), Holliday Hinckley (David) and Rowdy Hinckley; and ten great-grandchildren, Jake, Miller, Lottie, Ford, Finn, Noah, Cora, Sienna, Hope and Acie. Special thanks to Dr. Carol Croft, her doctor of over 20 years, for her phenomenal care and love and for her extended family of caregivers over the last two years, Henrietta, Carolyn, Janiece , Shenequa and Bryle. Service for Linda will be at 4:00 pm, Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Wildwood Chapel at Restland Memorial Park with Dr. Doug Skinner officiating. The family will begin receiving friends at the Wildwood Chapel at 3:00 pm. Following the service, there will be a short procession to the Garden of Gethsemane at Restland Memorial Park for a brief committal service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Juliette Fowler Foundation, 1234 Abrams Rd., Dallas, Texas 75214. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home located at 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243.
