Linda Kay Hurd's Obituary
Linda Kay Hurd, 73, wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend to all, died unexpectedly from complications due to Covid-19 on August 13, 2020. Linda was born March 21, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri to William and Helen (Weyeneth) Engle. Loving wife of 48 years to Harry Hurd, Linda was Harry’s one true love, and he was her knight and shining armour. Linda and Harry together raised two beautiful daughters, Angela Slifer and Jessica Sanez. Linda loved being a second mom to her son-in-laws, Timothy Slifer and Billy Sanez. She was the grandmother of Austin and Kelsie Slifer and Liam and Lila Sanez, and great-grandmother to Selene Slifer (Austin and Mariah Slifer’s daughter). Linda, one of seven Engle children, always looked forward to her weekly, sometimes daily chats with her youngest sister, Wanda Fellers. She adored being an aunt and great-aunt to so many wonderful nieces and nephews.
After moving to Richardson, Texas in 1972, Linda was very active in Greenwood Hills Elementary School. She was always volunteering to help in many areas and served as room mom during the years her daughters were in school there. During the time Angela was in school, Linda helped lead the Campfire Girls, and later when Jessica was there Linda was a leader for the local Girl Scout troop for many years. At multiple camping trips, she and her husband arranged for the girls to enjoy boat rides as part of the experience. She was always community-minded and looked for ways to help others in the neighborhood.
A faithful friend to so many over the years, she could always be counted on to help whenever someone was in need. As a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority, joining in 1973, Linda served in every office in her chapter multiple times over the years. She was also an active member in Richardson City Council of Beta Sigma Phi and held multiple offices there as well. Linda loved her Bunco BABE’S Church group as well as the Richardson Senior Center Quilters group she attended regularly. Linda is a past president of the Richardson Camaraderie Book Club. Her heart was always lifted after spending Thursday afternoons with her Bible study group. Linda loved crafting, scrapbooking, playing cards, painting, having tea, and simply just being with all of her dearly loved friends.
An avid traveler, movie lover, reader, and professional lake lover, Linda’s real and abiding passions were always her family and friends. Linda sought to instill in her children and grandchildren a zest for life, commitment to family and friends, and the power of laughter and a smile.
She will be missed by not only her family and sorority sisters, but by the many friends who knew her and were touched by her service, hospitality, generosity, loyalty, humor, and kindness. Linda was “that” person for so many, one of a kind, and will always hold a place in our hearts. She was a great listener with time for everyone from all walks of life. Always available to offer warmth at every encounter, she never flinched at the opportunity to express her persistence and determination when needed! Linda was the best thing that happened to so many of us and strengthened us every day we were graciously allowed to be with her.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, William (Bill) and Helen Engle, her in-laws, Robert (Bob) and Elizabeth (Betty) Hurd, her brothers, Larry, Jerry, and Terry Engle, her sisters and their husbands, Francis and Clyde Northup and Vicky and Joseph Payne, her brother-in-law, Micheal Fellers , many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as far too many precious friends.
The family asks that you spend time with your children, take a walk on the beach with loved ones, and make a toast to enduring friendships lifelong and beyond. That is what Linda would wish for all of us.
The family will receive visitors Friday, August 28 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas. Graveside funeral services are Saturday, August 29 at 10:00 AM at Restland Funeral Home (Whispering Waters I) 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX, 75243. **Current social distancing and mask requirements will be followed.
