Lois Josephine Shelburn's Obituary
Lois Shelburn died on April 7, 2017. She was born on November 28, 1926 in Leavenworth, Kansas to Clifford and Montie Pierce. At some point in her childhood. Lois with her parents and sister, Eula Mae moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. It was here that Lois received her basic education. In high school, she was a drum majorette. After high school, she attended nursing school at Union Hospital and graduated as a registered nurse.On November 5, 1949 Lois married Bill Shelburn. She worked in a pediatrician’s office until they started a family. She stayed home to raise her two children.In 1963, Lois and her family moved to Dallas. Lois enrolled in a refresher course for R.N.s at Baylor University Medical Center. In time Lois was the Director of Nursing in the Jonnson Hospital. Later, she became the Director of Nursing in the Truett Hospital. Eventually, Lois became the liason for the Medical Staff and the Hospital administrators. Lois planned the meetings and dinner for the two groups. Many doctors, nurses and administrators trusted and admired Lois. After twenty-five years of service, Lois retired from Baylor in 1992.Lois loved to read and play bridge. Her closest companion was her dog “Sammy”. Her grandchildren were her delight and she was always happy when they came to visit.In 2013, after Bill had died, Lois moved from her home of fifty years to a retirement community. There, she made many friends and enjoyed playing bridge. She made the most of her golden years. She lived and loved to the age of 90.Lois was a counselor to many, she brought comfort on difficult days; smiles when sadness intruded; hugs when spirits sagged; faith so that you could believe; confidence for when you doubted; patience to accept the truth; courage to know yourself; and love to complete your life.Lois made the decision to donate her body to Southwestern Medical School for medical research when she died. She gave herself to help others.Lois was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and husband. She is survived by her son, Greg Shelburn and daughter, Linda Thomas. She had four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.One of Lois’ favorite authors was Erma Bombeck. Ms. Bombeck once said and I think Lois would agree, “When I stand before God a the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, “I used everything you gave me'”.
