Lon Cardwell's Obituary
Born 1923 in Oklahoma , Lon passed away at home in November of this year. He was preceded in death by: his parents Thomas and Odie Cardwell; his brother Averal; his brother Tom, with his wife Hilda and their son Timmy. His sister Loma with her husband Voin and their son R. Joe and grandson Cary. His sister Augusta Lea with her husband Guy and their beloved daughter Karla Lea; His daughter-in-law Judyne and her son Damien and grandson Daniel. Lon was survived by his wife of 73 years Gloria; His brother Dan with his wife Melvina, their child Mara Lee with her husband Brook and their children Wendy and Ryan and their child Richard and his wife Elena and their daughter Mary. His brother Billy with his wife Norma and their daughter Karen with her children Kari Dawn and Kristin and their daughter Toni and her son Cody. His son Dean with Adam Armstrong and his wife Angella; Their daughter Amberleigh and their son Hunter. Their son Gabriel and his wife Ashley and their daughter Athena. His son Drew Cardwell with his wife Louise and their son Shane, his wife Stacy and their daughter Kellyanne and his son Forrest with his wife Kristin. Lon was a Veteran of WWII, where he was a 2nd Lieutenant and Pilot in the Army Air Corp (before the formation of the Air Force). On returning home, he and Gloria built a home in Oklahoma from the ground up by themselves. Returning to College, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following his move to Dallas, he finished his Masters Degree in Propulsion Engineering with a Specialty in Nuclear Physics from SMU. Finally, he worked and attained the hours for a Doctorate in Nuclear Physics from MIT. Lon worked at LTV (Ling Temco Vaught) as an R&D Rocket Scientist. While at LTV, he worked and created numerous inventions in the Missiles and Space Division. He retired from LTV in 1983. Lon was so talented, that he never wanted to hire help for things that he knew he could do, and do it better…while training his sons in the trades. Lon had numerous hobbies that kept him constantly busy. One of his greatest passions was working on the Farm he and Gloria purchased in East Texas, in 1967. They raised Registered Black Angus Cattle and grew Pine Trees for Lumber. He also studied under a Master Wood Carver, Mr. Stromier, in 1955; from which he made furniture and carved beautiful works of art. He was a consummate Outdoorsman, and loved hunting Deer and Elk in High Country. On lazy days, he could be found on the bank of some body of water, where he might fish for days and nights.Family will receive friends on November 7, 2018 from 6-8PM at: Church of the Disciple 220 S.
