Louis Evans Moore Jr.'s Obituary
Louis was born in Dallas, Texas, on March 21, 1928. He passed away at home on July 8, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Betty, after nearly fifty-three years of marriage; two children, daughter Lucinda Morelle Moore, her husband Bart Velazquez; and son Louis Matthews and his partner Heath Hatchett; and two grand-daughters, Rebecca Morelle and Andrea Michelle Velazquez. He is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Driver; a niece, Julie Grau and her husband Jeffrey; and a nephew, Clayton Driver and his fiance Beth O’Dell. A 1945 graduate of Adamson High School, he was the third great-grandson of John Thomas, Dallas County’s first Judge. Louis received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SMU and taught one year at SMU before moving into public education as a biology teacher at Hillcrest High School from l951 to 1962, and an assistant principal at Marsh Junior High for four years. He was then called upon to administer the Title One Program for DISD at its inception. After nine years in central administration, he was assigned to Stockard Middle School for four years and then Seagoville Middle School where he completed his thirty-ninth year with the District. While assigned in central administration, he pursued a doctorate in Educational Administration from Nova Southwestern University, which he completed in 1976. In his twenties, Louis was a featured tenor soloist in several Methodist churches but found that the conflicts with teaching activities were too limiting. He broke out to work summers in Estes Park at the YMCA of the Rockies where he and Betty met and were married in 1956 at the Hyde Memorial Chapel on the YMCA grounds. In addition to his educational pursuits, Louis was inspired by interests in genealogy, art, opera, travel, and the collection of Southwest Indian arts and crafts. Having been instrumental in the planning and support of the Churchill Recreation Center, in 2008 he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the City of Dallas for his outstanding service to the neighborhood. However, above all, he was dedicated to his home and family. Louis will be deeply missed, greatly appreciated, and fondly remembered. Because of his love for the YMCA of the Rockies, anyone who so desires may send a memorial to the YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park Center, Lula W. Dorsey Museum, 2515 Tunnel Road, Estes Park, CO 80517. A visitation will be held on Friday, July 10 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Restland Funeral Home. After a private interment, a memorial service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 at Preston Hollow United Methodist Church, 6315 Walnut Hill Lane.
