Loyle and Velma Miller's Obituary
Loyle Pope Miller November 7, 1920 – October 23, 2016 Velma Nunn Miller and March 21, 1920 – October 21, 2016 As they promised each other almost 75 years ago, Loyle and Velma were loving and kind to the end, and were parted by death only briefly. Velma passed peacefully in their Dallas home on Friday, October 21, at the age of 96. Only 36 hours later, Loyle joined her on Sunday, October 23, age 95, at peace and once again sharing their journey, this time through eternity. With their rural upbringings on west Kansas farms near Pierceville and Rexford, Velma and Loyle were forged from similar stock and circumstances. The Dust Bowl, The Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and World War II did much to mold their character and commitment to each other and to family. Married in San Luis Obispo, California on March 21, 1942, they were too soon separated for a long 33 months as Loyle served in the South Pacific as a Company Commander with the 350th Engineers. Following the war years they built a life that included 2 years on the GI Bill at the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering, graduation in 1949, work for both Shell and Tenneco Oil Companies, and the raising of three children. After 26 moves in almost 20 years, they moved to Big D in 1968 where Loyle joined the then small independent oil company, J-W Operating Company. After 20 enjoyable, challenging and successful years, Loyle retired to travel with Velma, while she still had her eyesight. Through all these years, Velma enjoyed her life with her family on many levels and with many interests. Loyle always said that through all those moves, she never complained. As her children can attest, that was a true statement. She was a constant and strong force and a supportive mother, Grandma and Great-Grandma. Through her oft used conversational abilities, she made new friends easily and kept them for life. And her love for her Sooner football and Texas Rangers baseball was legendary. Loyle was an equally loving and involved parent. Perhaps more quiet, but with the same strength and devotion to family. Humble and ever grateful, his love for us never faded. In 2006, they made their final move to Highland Springs Retirement Community in Dallas. This last phase of their lives included new friendships and the joys of seeing grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up. To all of the family, they left a legacy of love and wise, life-enhancing advice. The way in which they lived their lives and loved each other will always be our inspiration. Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest O. Nunn and Susie Smithson Nunn, of Garden City, Kansas. Surviving her are cousins and a niece of whom she was very fond. Loyle was preceded in death by his parents Paul Samuel Miller and Ruth Pope Miller of Manhattan, Kansas, and brothers Myron Miller and wife Darlene Miller, Boyd Miller, Dick and wife Betty Miller. He is survived by his sister Marilyn Whitley and sister-in-law June Miller, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond as well. Loyle and Velma were survived by their children James R Miller and wife Tanya, David A Miller, and Patricia Miller Schonwald and her husband Fred, as well as their ex-daughters-in-law Barbara Miller and Paulette Miller. Their devoted grandchildren are Brent and Jennifer Miller, Stacey and Mark Overbey, Erin and Laura Miller, Kristina and Andy Shipp, Mackenzie Miller, Hannah Miller, Chelsea and Mitchell Richards, Beth and Greg Chansolme and Julia and Paul Schonwald.
