Lucienne Yingling's Obituary
YINGLING, LUCIENNE (nee McNiel), age 94, died October 3, 2013, in Dallas, Texas. Born January 7, 1919, in Hoxie, Arkansas, to James Samuel McNiel and Alma McNiel (nee Montgomery), Lucienne graduated from North Dallas High School in 1936, and in 1940 graduated from Texas State College for Women where she majored in costume design. After graduation she worked as a sportswear designer for Marbrook and the Lorch Company of Dallas. On April 3, 1942, Lucienne married Army Staff Sergeant Roy Donald Yingling, a recipient of three air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1954 the couple moved with their three children to Lubbock, Texas. An accomplished seamstress (which included pattern making), Lucienne was one of the original DIY trailblazers dressing her children in their Easter finery and exotic Halloween costumes. Following the death of her husband in 1989 Lucienne returned to Dallas, where she was a devoted grandmother, avid bridge player, and crosswords solver (at a dizzying pace). She put her sharp mind, quick wit, and wry sense of humor to great use entertaining friends and family. Lucienne is survived by her daughters Nancy Yingling of Austin and Kathryn Yingling of Dallas, grandchildren Erin and Walter Hinz of Dallas, sister-in-law Marie McNiel of Dallas, and nieces Marianne McNiel of Emmaus, PA, Margaret McNiel of Dallas, and Elizabeth McNiel of Boston. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy; her son Don; and her brother J. S. McNiel, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 on Tuesday, October 8 at Restland Wildwood Chapel in Dallas. Lucienne’s cremated remains will be put to rest next to her husband at Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, TX. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Lucienne’s memory may be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars and The Humane Society.
