Lula Pearl McLeod (“Pearl”) was born on September 19, 1931 in Robeson County, NC. Lula passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.
She was the oldest child of Frank and Flora Mae Davis. She was very close (like a second mom - whether they liked it or not) to her younger siblings, who all preceded her in death (Jimmie Davis, Edith Alston and Tim Davis). She grew up in the McCain/Raeford area and attended Upchurch High School. She enjoyed growing up in a loving home in this small southern community with family surrounding her and everyone being friends in the community. In this community is where she met Morris McLeod and a special friendship was formed. They were married in December 1947. They began their family in the McCain/Raeford area having four children. The family of six moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1957. After their fifth child was born they moved to Queens, NY where their last child was born. This house was alway a lively house, where many family parties and BBQs took place. There was always lots of food and desserts. Pearl loved to crochet and bake. Her specialities were carrot cake and cheesecake. She was a devoted wife, mother, loving sister, aunt and grandmother and friend. She adored her grandchildren and her nieces and nephews who affectionately called her Aunt Pearl.
She dedicated herself to God in 1972 and was a devoted and active member in the congregations of Jehovah Witnesses in South Ozone Park, New York, Henderson, North Carolina and Richardson,Texas.
She worked many years at the New York Telephone Company and was able to retire early. After retiring she was able to enjoy traveling, going to Broadway shows and music concerts. She enjoyed socializing with her family and friends in New York, Virginia, North Carolina and Texas; visiting them and talking on the phone.
Her loving husband, Morris, and also her beloved children preceded her in death; Lola McLeod and Morris “Ronnie” McLeod also her dear daughter-in-law, Jeryl McLeod and grandson, Joshua Sherrod.
Lula Pearl leaves to cherish her memory, her four living children, Margaret (James) Gibson, Deborah Sherrod, Deidre (David) Morris and Lowell (Robyn) McLeod. She will be missed by her loving brother-in-law, Gilford Alston and nephews, Derrick and Darnell; who were like sons to her. She also leaves loving memories with her grandchildren, Leslie McLeod, Jennifer Hairston Sherrod, Brandy, Brittany and Danielle Sherrod; Cheyne (Steve) Dent, Carell Benton, Victoria and Devin Morris. Her memory will also be cherished by her great-grandchildren, Cory, Chase, Kameron, Logan, Jason, Jayla, Jordyn, James, and Brianna.
