Luong Huy Phan's Obituary
Luong Huy Phan, 90, of McKinney, Texas, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on Sunday, May 17, 2020.
Luong was born on August 15, 1929 to Tung Huy Phan and Sam Thi Cao in Ha Tinh, Vietnam. He graduated from Khoa Mot Class of Nam Dinh. Luong proudly served in the Army for the Republic of South Vietnam for 25 years. He attained the rank of Colonel and was III Corps Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Operations. During that period, he came to the US several times for specialized officer training at Fort Benning and Fort Leavenworth. Luong had a distinguished military career receiving many awards and recognitions including two Bronze Star Medals by the United States Secretary of the Army for meritorious service.
In 1975, Luong and his family emigrated to the United States to begin a new life in Champaign, Illinois. He started his civilian career at Sears where he was the assistant manager for the hardware department. After 25 years, he and his wife retired in McKinney where he enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, and spending time with friends and family, especially attending special events with his grandchildren.
Luong is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Uyen-Thuan Phan, three daughters, Michelle Minh-Khue Yeh and her husband, David, Therese Tu-Ngoc Dahlberg and her husband, Thomas, and Barbara Boi-Hoan Phan along with six grandchildren who adored their Grandpa – Jacqueline, Andrew, Victor, Jason, Carter, and Brian. Luong was preceded in death by his parents and five of seven loving siblings.
A Buddhist Ceremony celebrated by Venerable Tran Ngoc Thanh of Dao Quang Temple will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, May 29, 2020 with visitation to begin at 1:00 PM, both in Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243.
